Paper describes evolution of existing ignition theories and critically reviews solid-phase thermal theory, hypergolic and heterogeneous ignition theories, and gas-phase ignition theory; purpose of review was to collect most of relevant analytical work, restate it in common body of notation, and present it in organized fashion that would bring out broader relationships among existing theories; attempt is made to describe ignition process in terms that will encompass all of mechanisms considered in various theories, to note where these theories fit in this description, and to examine relation of analytical models to physical reality.
