Tubes, called STEM (storable, tubular, extendable member) are used in space applications as antennas, stabilizing and docking booms; phenomenon of double buckling in torsion, which explains observed reduction of torsional stiffness during twisting, is discussed; torque-twist relation exhibits change in slope at point of first instability which is found not to cause collapse of torque-carrying capability of tube, continuing to support increasing torque until second instability occurs; experimental evidence suggests that torque-twist relation beyond first instability can be represented by lower and upper bound.
