In summary, it is suggested that gas turbines are probably best choice of prime mover for hydrofoils, hovercraft and fast patrol boats; in larger warships combinations of gas turbines with other plant offer considerable advantages compared with conventional machinery; not only are there substantial gains in endurance and availability, but there are savings in maintenance, running costs and watch-keeping personnel; opinion is also turning to merchant ship application, and gas turbine cargo ship of 24,500 tons dw is under construction in United States.
