Exponential random-search procedure developed at M.I.T. over past 2 yr that shows promise of usefulness in expediting routine preliminary ship design; it utilizes weighted multiple-parameter criterion, and determines dimensions, proportions, and coefficients of least cost (amortized building cost plus yearly fuel operating cost) or most profitable (highest capital recovery factory or any other specified economic criterion) ship for any given set of owner (merchant, military) requirements; it is noted relatively crude empirical expressions are used in calculating subareas of ship design process; examples for cargo ship and tanker models.
