Method for calculation of deformations and stresses caused by torsion in ships with large hatch openings; question of extent of acceptable deformation of opening is discussed; various structural arrangements found in ships with large hatch openings are examined, and it is concluded possible to arrive at reasonable nominal stresses without excessively heavy scantlings; cargo in alternate holds is definite possibility.
