Use of IR sensor techniques in determining attitude information with respect to various planets by means of their self-emitted IR radiation is considered; IR trackers can incur serious errors when viewing planet through exhaust plume of rocket engine; quantitative prediction involves evaluation of distribution of plume properties, spectral emission and absorption of plume as function of line of sight, and integrated radiation power entering tracker fields of view from planet and plume; numerical example of error calculations is presented for radiation-balance tracker located on space vehicle executing earth-moon mission.
