Low launch rates for present and future missions and uncertainties in performance and operational modes focus attention on launch vehicles that perform range of missions; evaluation and comparison for multi-and single-mission concepts capable of performing three future missions; 13 evaluation criteria are used to measure effectiveness of multimission vehicle concepts; each vehicle has different first stage, but final stages are identical; first stages are horizontal takeoff (HTO) composite (i.e., airbreather and rocket), vertical takeoff (VTO) rocket, and HTO rocket with sled-assisted takeoff; flexibility of reusable multimission vehicles is shown to be achievable with only small penalty in weight.
