Statistical estimation of trajectories of maneuverable lifting re-entry vehicles is studied by minimum-variance estimation technique; problems associated with applying linear filter theory to re-entry problem and means of circumventing these; numerical results are presented showing characteristics of re-entry filtering; mathematical model includes effects of earth oblateness and rotation on three-dimensional particle motion of vehicle; data given demonstrate effects of using single reference trajectory, advantages and disadvantages of updating nominal reference trajectory, and timewise convergence of estimated trajectory during single-pass processing.
