BEA Helicopter Experimental Unit was established in 1947 to explore potentialities of helicopter for scheduled operations; initial equipment was three Sikorsky S.51's and two Bell 47B's; first operation was mail collection and delivery service in Somerset and Dorset; first passenger helicopter service started on June 1 1950, between Liverpool and Cardiff with optional call at Wrexham; operational experience, high load factors, and various transportation services; details of radio navigation equipment of BEA aircraft, which include Decca, ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) and VOR/ILS (Omni-Range/Instrument Landing System) receivers; future plans.
