Report on design of complete microwave-powered helicopter which can position itself on microwave beam whose axis is vertical to earth's surface; method of controlling motion of conventional helicopter is reviewed; method by which microwave beam and associated sensors establish "horizon" and references for other motions of helicopter; control system which is both stable and sufficiently responsive is described; mechanical design is discussed; beam-riding feature frees helicopter to fly unimpeded by tethers or other physical connections at altitudes ranging from near ground level to altitudes of 50,000 to 60,000 ft; future developments are considered.
