Cardio-thoracic injuries comprise significant segment of injuries sustained in automobile collisions; because of need for additional information to prevent injuries, Vehicle Trauma Research group at School of Medicine, University of California, instituted study which attempted to correlate pathophysiologic aspects of injuries with kinematics and biomechanics of collision; attention has been paid to effects of restraining devices and relationship of injuries of various wheel-column configurations including "energy absorbing" designs; 67 cases analyzed are presented as preliminary pilot study illustrating value of approach to collision injuries.
