Linear induction motor installation, designed for crash testing vehicles of up to 2 1/2 ton at speeds up to 50 mph, is part of vehicle crash test rig employed by Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA); motor is described as 3.3 kv, 1 1/4 ton linear induction unit of double-side moving primary type, with 1-in. thick by 30 in. high, stationary vertical aluminum reaction-plate; electric power is provided through 2.5 Mva, 11/3.3 kv transformer, with various tappings so that acceleration can be adjusted according to weight of vehicle; when vehicle is 10 ft in front of concrete block, power supply is cut and motor uncoupled from car; test is completed in 3 sec, and electric power consumed is 1 kw-hr.
