Federal government has started new programs leading to standards in vehicle handling, crashworthiness, driver training, accident research, vehicle inspection, and record systems; first set of federal standards for private vehicles was issued by Dept of Transportation in 1967, based primarily on General Services Administration's background; another set of proposed federal vehicle safety standards is in process of review; mathematical modeling approach is proposed as method to assimilate facts and help evaluate effectiveness of vehicle safety standards.
