Report of study made in connection with devices towed deep behind ship; theory of towing is presented in form applicable to all types of cable, and emphasizes practical methods and simple approximations; review of accepted fundamentals showed essential problem is to define how hydrodynamic forces acting on element of cable vary with element's inclination to flow; once these so-called loading functions are known, towing geometry and forces can be calculated; support for assumptions proposed comes from analysis of trials at sea; `optimum configuration', defined, establishes towed-body and cable characteristics for attaining specified depth and speed with minimum cable tension.
