Theoretical capability, design considerations, and experimental testing of pulsed ruby laser absorptivity spectrophone and cw CO2 laser absorptivity spectrophone is described; spectrum of water vapor line at 6943.8A was obtained; method appears to have significance as scientific tool for study of multiple photon absorptions and other weak nonconservative processes in gases which are normally overwhelmed by scattering losses from light beam.
