Since 1950, natural rubber couplings have replaced steel springs in Swedish locomotives which haul heaviest trains in Europe on most northern electric railway in world; typically, train of about 5000 metric tons, exclusive of locomotive, must start on gradients of 1 to 100 at temperatures down to -40 C in snow which may be several meters deep; in some cases, rubber coupling is in service for over 2 million km before requiring renewal.
