Various methods of evaluating locomotive stability by means of electrical measuring devices such as weigh-bars, measured-rail, strain-gaged wheel, and ride index methods are described, and their limitations are mentioned; duration of action of lateral force, and instantaneous loading and unloading of wheel imparting maximum pressure are two factors which have bearing on locomotive derailment; measured values of lateral forces are tabulated for steam, diesel and electric locomotives under service conditions on Indian Railways and are compared with Blondel's empirical limit; insofar as safe running speed of locomotive is concerned, decision of expert after riding in locomotive cab at various speeds is final.
