Method is presented for optimizing economic model of nonclosed network of pipe lines transporting mixtures of wood chips and water; cost function for single pipe is developed as polynomial expression in terms of concentration of solids and pipe diameter; characteristic response surface generated by this polynomial provides method for reducing pipe diameters; optimization of multiple-pipe networks utilizes cost function of single pipes and requires that continuity of flow of mixture is satisfied at junctions; summaries of numerical examples of three-line network are given; costs of pipe line transport of woodchips are compared with those of truck and rail for existing area.
