Due to Iceland's physical features (post-glacial lava flows cover one fifth while another 12% is covered by glaciers) road distances between two points are often considerably in excess of those by air and domestic air services have attained considerable importance; all inhabited areas are, however, now served by motorable roads which make up network of around 5500 mi; difficult road and weather conditions present unique problems; there are no railroads and all passenger and goods transport is effected by road vehicles operated by private companies; organizational features, description of bus station at Reykjavik, types of buses employed and other details.
