Spring brake unit, developed by Pacific Gas and Electric Co, uses truck's air system as opposing force, that is, normal air pressure holds steel spring in compression; whenever air pressure drops below 45 psi, spring is released to apply brakes automatically; separate control is provided in driver's compartment for manual operation at any operating pressure; spring application on brake mechanism also acts as reliable parking brake when air is exhausted from spring chamber; air brake system inspection procedures are also described.
