Criteria to evaluate performance of compound helicopter tilt wing, jet lift, and STOL during 2 missions were relative productivity, fuel index, and growth factor; concepts are evaluated vs combat mission (payload 1500 lb, 3 hr on station at 225 knots, 6 min of hovering at 6000 ft, 90 F; ground run for STOL is 300 ft); shifting of speed requirements to higher values makes jet lift competitive; analysis for Intra-Theater Transport mission (10-ton payload, over 500 nautical mi radius) shows that shaft-driven propeller or rotor systems have necessary capability, high productivity, and excellent fuel indexes.
