Objective of NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Application) program; possible trends in application of solid-core, heat-exchanger type of nuclear rocket propulsion; engine performance parameters, such as propellant feed cycles, specific impulse, nozzle length, area ratio, and engine flow rate, are discussed; potential space missions are covered on basis of typical ranges of velocity (from orbital launch) required; results are presented parametrically so that engine thrust, duration, and startup weight or delivered payload for any mission or velocity requirement can be determined.
