Design concept is presented for controlled-ullage tank that would be reliable and light for space applications; tank is differentiated from supercritical and positive expulsion tanks; principles of operation; tank design involves making portion of tank porous and subcooling liquid in adjacent collection passages; tank is simple, relatively light, uses simplified equipment and reduces residual liquid; reliability is high compared to other systems, and concept is readily scalable; tank can be adapted for use of liquid hydrogen; typical application is described.
