Stability of gravity-oriented satellite is investigated as function of its orbit; for inverse-square-law central-force field, large-motion (nonlinear) attitude behavior is numerically investigated as function of orbit eccentricity and vehicle shape; it is shown that major mechanism of tumbling is excitation of motion in yaw-roll plane by forced motion in pitch through second order coupling terms which are neglected in linearized analyses.
