Paper reviews some of anticipated metabolic consequences and physiologic effects of space flight such as effect of immobilization and confinement, cabin atmospheric requirements, selection of adequate diet for maintenance of fitness and for protection against radiation damage, and effect of metabolic periodicities on performance; several methods for maintaining optimal health and operational efficiency are examined with respect to extended missions for which there will be no capability of re-supply of crew rotation.
