Doppler navigation radar for space applications must be at least 30 db more sensitive than present Doppler sensors but still maintain same error tolerances; solution of problem by conventional approaches is hampered by space and power limitations of present spacecraft; paper shows that proper frequency modulation of microwave transmitter can code ground scatterer return in such way that signal bandwidth reduction (40-50 times) can be effected (referenced to normal cw bandwidth) with attendant increase in peak spectral power and reduction of certain critical error sources.
