Technological advances which made possible design of aircraft carrying twice load of present transports while lowering operating costs and increasing passenger comfort are considered; incorporation of number of significant new design features and systems into 747 such as large-capacity fuselage, high-bypass-ratio engines, aerodynamics design improvements with respect to wings, variable camber flaps on outboard section, combined with conventional Krueger flaps on inboard section; refinements to landing gears, improvements in avionics systems, flight control and hydraulic system; passenger handling, and baggage-handling procedures.
