Problems of detecting fire and overhead in supersonic aircraft, while similar to those in subsonic aircraft, have certain unique characteristics; characteristics are due basically to dynamic and thermal environment associated with Mach 3 to Mach 4.5 flight regime; approach toward solution of these problems and history of aircraft fire and overheat detection leading to current system design concepts are presented.
