Paper attempts to define some important and less recognized characteristics of scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet); parameter considered as predominant is specific impulse when variation of specific impulse as function of flight Mach number is investigated for different cycles; in general, field of application for turbojet engine is between 0 and 5 to 6, and subsonic burning ramjet, between 1.3 to 2 and 6 to 8, whereas scramjet is considered useful above 5 to 6 Mach; cycles and performances in supersonic combustion; engine design requirements of engine components, in particular, inlet, combustion, tangential injection with chemical reaction, analysis of flow field in combustor and nozzle; engine development and testing.
