Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Div conducted wind tunnel tests at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers to determine performance levels of exhaust nozzles installed in aircraft; dual nozzles were mounted in rings simulating entire airplane and single nozzle was installed in shaft-mounted rig simulating aft end of half airplane; baseline isolated tests were also conducted with single exhaust nozzle mounted on cylindrical shaft; analysis of test results, including some local external pressure data, showed that to obtain most reliable evaluation of differences between exhaust nozzle systems, complete aircraft installation should be used early in program.
