Ground testing is important in development of hypersonic airbreathing propulsion systems (ramjet and scramjet); model tests of free-jet engine test facilities were conducted at Mach 7 and 11 to provide pressure recovery data at hypersonic velocities; running pressure recoveries in excess of 50% of freestream normal shock recovery were attained with adjustable bypass flow diffuser; analysis of pressure-recovery data led to new definition of diffuser efficiency which compares actual pressure recovery to recovery obtained if bypass flow were expanded to diffuser throat area and then subjected to normal shock deceleration.
