Three 3-shaft engines have been designed; first is Trent in 10,000-lb static thrust class, scheduled to go into service in projected Fairchild Hiller F228; second is RB.207 in 50,000-lb thrust class for large medium and long haul aircraft, and latest is RB.211 in 35, 000-lb static thrust bracket; performance requirements, aerodynamic considerations of compressors and turbines leading to choice of three shaft engine, and mechanical design of three shaft engines are presented and advantages pointed out; operational aspects and performance; schematics are included.
