Pan American Boeing 727 jetliner made first fully automatic landing at JFK International Airport, New York, in 1967 in scheduled flight; with visibility restricted by snow flurries, and despite crosswinds gusting to 12 knots, touchdown was smoothly executed within 4 ft of runway centerline; evolution of 727 system with respect to its use in obtaining progressively lower operational weather minimums for airlines and description of overall landing system; details of dual-pitch channels of automatic pilot, and unique methods used to implement system that is both safe and dependable; 727 automatic landing certification program and touchdown dispersions are shown to meet tentative FAA criteria.
