To obtain substantial weight reduction, study was carried out at Cessna Aircraft Co to replace traditional Cessna cantilever flat leaf spring with cantilever tubular spring design; however, inherent defects, such as stringers, die marks, etc on inside of seamless tubing form stress risers when tube is bent or flexed longitudinally; this lowers impact strength and shortens fatigue life of heat treated steel; program established to remove stress risers consisted of development of material specifications, processing requirements, quality control procedures, and test program.
