Characteristics of passenger flows to departure lounges and into airplanes, boarding times, needed lounge capacities, and numbers of airplane entry doors are studied; two analytical models derived from data at San Francisco International Airport are developed and applied to Boeing 747 and SST airplanes; one model describes flow to departure lounge; other describes flow from lounge into airplane; based on these models, relationships between loading times and space required for departure lounges and number of entry doors needed are determined; procedures developed in study may be applied to other airports.
