When developing a project in the field of information and communications technologies (ICT), critical infrastructure represents significant costs. One must also consider problems such as intercommunication latency, or the scalability and stability of real-time processes. These issues can cause doubts in researchers when deciding whether to use cloud-based or traditional architectures in a project, a choice that affects the budget and the viability of the process. This article aims to provide support for this type of analysis and facilitate the choice of which structure to implement. It presents a case study about a project on real-time meteorological analysis, which was implemented on both platforms at the same time. An assessment was conducted regarding performance of cloud technologies versus physical technologies. The document describes the operative systems, advantages and characteristics of both approaches, so they can help choose one alternative over the other, ac- cording to the requirements of the project. In order to assess the project, it was executed on physical platforms on site and on cloud computing platforms; this made it possible to compare both technologies and determine differences in their infrastructure, safety, performance and reliability. To implement the model, a simple virtualization model was used, using the Esxi 6.0 Hypervisor from VMware. For the Cloud infrastructure, Microsoft Azure was used for virtualization.
