With the First World War came the "Submarine Menace." U-Boats wrought havoc in the shipping lanes around the British coast and the Royal Navy was faced with the task of locating and destroying a hidden foe. In the early days of the war the principal method of attacking U-Boats was to lure them to the surface where their thin hulls were vulnerable to the four inch and larger guns mounted aboard naval vessels.
