Materials and methods. Numerical simulation intended to optimize hull lines. Experimental data were obtained in KSRC test tanks.Main results. This research yielded new data on air cavity efficiency for a mixed-navigation (river/sea) carrier ship in deep water, open shallow water and restricted shallow-water channel. This paper also investigates the effect of air cavity upon shipmaneuverability in both deep and shallow water.Conclusion. The study shows that air cavities are a promising solution for mixed (river/sea) navigation vessels operating in inland waterways of the Western Europe. Recommended bottom profile reduces towing resistance by 14-20 % as compared to thebasic ship with smooth hull lines. In terms of maneuverability, air-cavity ship is superior to the basic one in a number of aspects.
