Emissions from road transport are a main cause of air pollution in cities. Therefore, worldwide legislation efforts aim for gradual emission reduction. However, sustainable mobility can be achieved only if the negative impacts on air quality are completely avoided. This thesis presents the development of Zero-Impact Emissions vehicles that do not affect air quality. To identify the most challenging scenarios for testing, a novel approach is established that combines aspects of air pollution with those of emissions. It is found that the average fleet emissions to achieve Zero-Impact in these scenarios range from 33 mg/km NOX for the uphill Brenner freeway down to 6 mg/km for a high-traffic highway. For testing the scenarios, an empirical-physical model for vehicle simulations is enhanced by advanced emission formation of the three-way catalyst and secondary pollutants such as particles from tire and brake abrasion, NH3 and N2O. Simulations with state-of-the-art vehicles show that additional emission reduction is required to achieve Zero-Impact, especially in high traffic or high cold start scenarios. Different technologies and control concepts are evaluated to close the gap. The results show that a combination of external exhaust heating and a dedicated emissions strategy achieves Zero-Impact Emissions in all scenarios. This indicates that future mobility can be sustainable in terms of pollution with limited additional hardware if holistic system optimization is performed and the operating strategy is adapted intelligently.
