In this article the proportional (P) – proportional integral (PI) variable structure velocity controller is investigated. This controller is used to coordinate the advantages and eliminate disadvantages of the conventional dynamics optimization methods of the electromechanical servo systems – the symmetrical and the quantitative optimums. The generalized model of the electromechanical servo system with P-PI variable structure velocity controller is formed by using MATLAB/Simulink software. According to the ITAE integral quality index, the velocity controller’s control law changeover time dependence on the static load ensuring the best dynamic quality of the electromechanical servo system is determined. The simulation results demonstrate that P-PI variable structure velocity controller coordinates the advantages and eliminates disadvantages of the symmetrical and the quantitative optimums, and ensures that the velocity dynamic error of the electromechanical servo system does not exceed ± 5% and the steady- state velocity error is zero.
