The goal of this project was to design a safety system for Material Handling Vehicle (MHV) prototype, which defines a safety distance that can change depending on the moving speed. The system will stop a prototype from moving forward when an object is detected within that safety distance. Based on theoretical knowledge of ultrasonic and photoelectric sensor concept, HC-SR04 sensor for distance measuring and H206 sensor for speed calculating were used to implement the system. Several additional modules were also required to build the complete prototypes. The signals from the sensors are processed by Arduino Uno microcontroller board. Programs were written in C language to control the movement of prototype via L298N motor driver and to determine safety distance for the system. Information of distance and speed will be shown on Liquid-crystal Display (LCD) 1602. Two prototypes were created to demonstrate two types of MHV, which are human driven one and Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV). The safety system can successfully separate different safety distances for different speed modes for both prototypes. Therefore, with further developments, this project can be applied to increase the safety of MHV, as well as minimize the accident rate in warehouse industry.
