Recent studies and empirical data showed that a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) can reflect the relationship between the network vehicle density and the network efficiency, as well as the relationship between vehicle numbers in the network and vehicle numbers leaving the network. This paper proposes a traffic flow optimization model among traffic zones using macroscopic fundamental diagrams. Firstly, the coarser graph is used to represent the road network. Secondly, the traffic flow optimization model is proposed. The objective of the model is to maximize the total number of vehicles leaving the network at a certain period, where decision variables are traffic flow among traffic zones. Finally, micro-simulation is used to test and verify the validity of the proposed model. The results show that when the network congestion occurs, the proposed model can alleviate traffic congestion in the congested area and improve the overall operational efficiency of the network, which has important application value for preventing and alleviating traffic congestion of urban road networks.
