The Full velocity difference (FVD) model considers the velocity difference, but it does not consider the driver’s reaction intensity to the velocity difference will be affected by the space headway and does not consider the speed of the previous multiple cars will also affect the driver’s driving behavior. This paper points out that the driver’s reaction intensity to the front and rear velocity difference is inversely proportional to the space headway and improves the FVD model by combining the influence of multiple front car average speeds on the driver’s driving behavior. And the stability analysis indicates that the improved model can reflect the asymmetrical characteristic of the vehicle during the following process and indicates that the number of preceding vehicles considered has an impact on the stability of the model. Results of numerical computer simulations confirm that the new model can reflect the asymmetry of the vehicle during the car-following process and point out that considering the average speed of multiple vehicles ahead is beneficial to improve the stability of the model.
