Yangtze River is the most important ∖ldGolden Waterway∖rd in China. With increasing attention being given to infrastructure construction of Golden waterway, the safety of inland water transport is becoming important. This article explores how advanced information technology can be used for identification and visualization of hazardous locations along Middle reach area of the Yangtze River using thousands of collisions and groundings data, which are considered to occur dependently of ship channel configuration, vessel traffic, and geographic location, from Changjiang Maritime Safety Administration (CMSA). The GIS provides a means of managing data by its spatial attributes and proves valuable in validating accident locations and understanding how characteristics of each location may have contributed to accident causation and consequences.
