Trip underreporting has been a persistent and well-known problem with household travel surveys. This paper's primary focus is on investigating the pattern and magnitude of trip underreporting behavior by comparing travel data from diary-based and GPS-assisted surveys. Detailed trip underreporting phenomenon (by trip purpose, mode, trip length, trip chaining, and time-of-day) is explored across various socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, such as person type, gender, household size, and household income. The results indicate that trip misreporting cannot be simply characterized as who under-reported orover-reported. It depends on the purpose, mode, duration and time of day of the trip making. This paper sheds lights on the multi-faceted dimension and the associated factors of trip misreporting.
