The Government of Bermuda has embarked on a major upgrade of its waterborne transportation system to relieve congestion of its limited highway system. The project includes purchase of higher speed ferries and planning for nine ferry landing sites with five sites now constructed. Formal criteria for design and construction of proposed and future ferry landings were developed to establish standardization between facilities. Limited on-island fabrication facilities resulted in development of modular designs that provided for pre-construction to occur off-island. The project, as implemented to date, has met the original goals of providing an alternative to driving for many commuters and providing relief to the bus service from the demands of cruise ship passenger transportation needs.
