Unlike general construction projects, expressway reconstruction and extension under the condition of ongoing large traffic demand usually has great influence on traffic characteristics such as delay and saturation due to reduced capacity, so it is essential to optimize the traffic organization to adjust to this kind of interruption. In this paper, a model of an expressway extension project was established using microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM. The length of the upstream transition area, which has great influence on the safety and level of service of the freeway, was selected as a variable. By varying the traffic flow in the simulation model, we found the range of the large traffic volume that can generate satisfactory level of service when the freeway is under extension, which can serve as a reference for traffic organization bureau to instruct traffic divergence if necessary. Secondly, under the large traffic volume, traffic condition was estimated under scenarios with different transition area length. A suitable range of the work-zone length was selected with the goal of achieving satisfactory safety and level of service. The resulted range of traffic volume and length of work-zone area can provide guidance and references for the decision-makers of the traffic organization and construction management.
