Traffic congestion is a growing concern in developing countries, driven by rapid urban expansion, population increases, and inadequate transportation infrastructure. These factors contribute to longer delays, higher accident risks, and increased emissions, all of which lead to significant economic and environmental consequences. Roundabouts, as key elements of urban traffic control, frequently face severe congestion due to inefficient design, ineffective management, and insufficient traffic control measures. This research aims to explore ways to improve traffic flow at major roundabouts in developing countries, where these challenges are particularly prevalent. By analyzing peak-hour traffic data with SIDRA Intersection software, the study highlights major operational shortcomings and inefficiencies at a typical roundabout. The analysis reveals considerable delays, reduced traffic throughput, and performance issues that adversely affect both road users and managing authorities. Factors like aggressive driving, inadequate law enforcement, and poor geometric design further compound these problems. To tackle these challenges, the study proposes a range of traffic optimization strategies, including building underpasses, modifying roundabout layouts, and installing signalized intersections. The long-term benefits of these strategies, such as reducing travel times, enhancing road safety, and improving the overall efficiency of the traffic network, are also evaluated. By offering practical insights into traffic optimization, this research provides a foundation for policymakers and urban planners to implement cost-effective solutions that can alleviate congestion, support economic development, and promote sustainable urban growth in developing countries.
