The knowledge of roadway capacity and level-of-service (LoS) are important basic input required for planning, design, analysis, and operation of roadway systems. There is a limited body-of-knowledge available about highway capacity and level-of-service (LoS) of multi-lane urban roads in Asian countries including India, where traffic composition and flow behaviour are considerably different from that of the developed world. Traffic flow on multi-lane urban roads in India are designed for high-speed movement, but, heterogeneity in traffic, non-lane based movement, and frequent access provided from service-lane, result in overall reduction of speed of vehicles, at certain times. Such roadway facilities possess following characteristics: dominance of car traffic, higher design speeds, and underpass/overpass at the location of intersection, which also makes it (multilane-urban roads) significantly different from the urban arterial roads. Twelve hours of video were captured on ten-lane divided section using digital camera, covering wide range of traffic flow, and composition prevailing on these facilities. Heterogeneous traffic flow is converted into PCU equivalent using the method proposed by Kumar et. al. Speed-flow relationship is developed for the study section using Van-Aerde model. LoS analysis was carried out using large amount of field observed dataset aggregated at 1-minute intervals to show maximum variation in traffic flow parameters. Empirical studies on some of the important traffic flow parameters such as: flow, density, and area occupancy are highlighted here. LoS clusters were defined using k-mean clustering technique. The findings of this study are also compared with American highway capacity guidelines. The capacity and LoS thresholds estimated along with its methodology may be useful for roadway having similar traffic conditions.
