This paper evaluates the optimal installation point of changeable message signs (CMS) on freeway work zones. A driving simulation experiment was performed with an experiment design of 3 (right-lane, left-lane, and two-lane closures) ×3 (no CMS, CMS 1000 m prior to, and CMS 100 m after the beginning point of a work zone). Speed, acceleration, throttle, and brake data were collected, and speed, acceleration standard deviation, driving deceleration, and operation power were selected as indicators. Compared to non-CMS status, all four indicators with CMS are influenced. Moreover, installation location of CMS had different effects on vehicle operation and driving behavior. It was determined that installation of CMS 100 meters after the beginning of a work zone was the most optimal location.
